EYE SPY IN COLOMBIA : UPDATES IN VETERINARY OPHTHALMOLOGY
This is a one day pre-Congress satellite meeting to be staged on Monday 26th September, the day immediately preceding WSAVA Congress Day ONE, when the Ophthalmology stream will take place.
Hosting this special one-day program of up-to-the-minute veterinary ophthalmology topics is the International Society of Veterinary Ophthalmology. ISVO has invited four well respected overseas speakers to complement topics already scheduled in the WSAVA Ophthalmology Stream (Tuesday).

EYE SPY IN COLOMBIA : UPDATES IN VETERINARY OPHTHALMOLOGY
Ben-Shlomo, Dr Gil
Dr. Gil Ben-Shlomo obtained his DVM degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in Israel in 1999. After practicing general medicine for two years he returned to his home university to obtain a PhD in Neuroscience and Ophthalmology while still working as a general practitioner. In 2010 Dr. Ben-Shlomo successfully completed a Comparative Ophthalmology residency at the University of Florida and subsequently obtained Board Certification and his Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. Not satisfied with just that, Dr. Ben-Shlomo became dual qualified as a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists in 2013. He is also a registered specialist in Veterinary Ophthalmology in the State of Israel.
Since 2010 Dr. Ben-Shlomo has been on the faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, where his active research interests include retinal neurodegenerative diseases and the electrophysiology of vision. He has been awarded for his achievements in the field of ophthalmology and vision research by the European Society of Veterinary Ophthalmology, The International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision and the Israeli Society of Vision and Eye Research.
Galera, Dr Paula
Dr Paula Dinez Galera DVM, MSc, DSc, PhD obtained her DVM degree from the Sao Paulo State University, Brazil in 1993, before completing a one-year internship in Small Animal Clinical Surgery at Freie university in Berlin, Germany (1994-1995). She then pursued a Master's (1998) and Doctorate degree (2002) in Veterinary Surgery with emphasis on Veterinary Ophthalmology, at São Paulo State University and performed post-doctoral studies at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville (2011-2012).
Dr Galera is a diplomate at Colegio Latinamericano de Oftalmologistas Veterinarios (CLOVE) working currently as Professor at Veterinary Medicine College, University of Brasilia, Brazil. She has scientific publications in national and international journals, and is a reviewer for scientific journals.
Martins, Dr Bianca da Costa
Dr. Bianca da Costa Martins DVM, MS, PhD pursued a Master's degree and PhD in Veterinary Surgery with emphasis on Veterinary Ophthalmology at the College of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, São Paulo State University in her native Brazil. She then completed postdoctoral studies as well as a residency in comparative veterinary ophthalmology at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville before joining the veterinary faculty at the University of Illinois.
Sanchez, Dr Rick
Dr Rick F Sanchez Dip. ECVO is a Spanish national although he pursued most of his education in the US and the UK. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in Biology in St. Thomas Aquinas College in New York and a DVM in 1999 after attending Ross and Louisiana State Universities. He commenced his specialty training in the US and later moved to the EU where he attended the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB) to obtain his European veterinary qualification in 2002. Since then, Rick obtained his RCVS Certificate in Ophthalmology (UK) and completed his residency training at the University of Glasgow and the Eye Veterinary Clinic in Herefordshire.
Once he completed exams for the Diploma of the ECVO in 2007, Rick joined a private practice in England where he headed the ophthalmology service from 2006 until 2011. He then joined the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) of the University of London where he is employed as Lecturer and Head of the Ophthalmology Service at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals (QMHA) at North Mymms. He is an Editorial Board Member of the Veterinary Ophthalmology Journal and also serves as Chair of the ECVO's Communication Committee.
